About Mark Twain National Forest (southern region)

The southern part of Mark Twain National Forest spans portions of southern Missouri, characterized by rolling hills, deep valleys, and rugged ridges formed by the Ozark Plateau. This section includes a mix of oak-hickory forests, glades, and freshwater streams that support a rich diversity of flora and fauna. Established in 1939, Mark Twain National Forest covers nearly 1.5 million acres across Missouri, managed by the U.S. Forest Service to conserve natural resources and provide public recreation. The southern region is home to several designated wilderness areas and multiple recreation sites, with opportunities for hiking, mountain biking, horseback riding trails, and numerous lakes and streams for fishing and paddle sports. Key landmarks include the scenic Irish Wilderness, the Eleven Point National Scenic River that runs along the forest’s edge, and the popular Current River. Visitors are drawn to the peaceful forest environment, the chance to see wildlife such as white-tailed deer, wild turkey, and diverse bird species, and the mix of rugged backcountry and accessible developed facilities. Seasonal changes highlight fall foliage hues and spring wildflower blooms, adding to the area’s natural appeal. The forest also manages multiple campgrounds and picnic areas, with trail systems ranging from easy to advanced, suitable for families and experienced outdoors people alike.
